Looking Back at 2026 — Building Toward 2027

As our first full Cardinals season came to a close, we spent a great deal of time reflecting on what worked well, where we grew, and where we needed to improve. One of the things we value most at Wheatland is being willing to learn, adapt, and evolve in order to create the best possible experience for our athletes and families.

The 2026 season provided valuable insight into what we want the Cardinals program to become moving forward, and we are excited to continue building something special together.

What We Took Away From 2026

​

Moving to Single Birth Year Teams

One of our biggest takeaways from 2026 was that mixed-age teams were more challenging than we had anticipated. While we entered the season hopeful that combined “U” teams would create strong developmental opportunities and roster flexibility, we found that the differences in physical maturity, experience, and stage of development often made it difficult to consistently create the environment we envisioned.

As a result, beginning in 2027, Wheatland Cardinals will move primarily to single birth year teams.

​

We will still consider age advancement in select situations where it is appropriate for an athlete’s development, but we will no longer operate broad combined-age “U” teams within our co-ed programming.

​

The exception to this will remain within our female programming, where many tournaments and events continue to be structured as combined age divisions across the hockey landscape.

​

Wheatland Presence Throughout the Season

Another important lesson from 2026 was the value of consistent Wheatland leadership within the team environment.

​

Moving forward, every Cardinals team will have a dedicated Wheatland staff member actively involved throughout the season — behind the bench during tournaments and on the ice for practices as part of the team environment.

​

We believe this consistency is important not only for player development, but also for communication, culture, accountability, and ensuring that the Wheatland approach is reflected across every team in our program.

Diversifying Tournament Experiences

Moving into 2027, we will intentionally diversify the tournament providers and events our teams attend throughout the season. One of the clearest lessons from 2026 was the importance of exposing our athletes and families to different levels of competition, event structures, environments, and overall experiences.

​

Our goal is to create a balanced schedule that prioritizes strong competition, well-run events, appropriate team placement, and positive experiences for our athletes both on and off the ice.

​

Extending the 24-Hour Cooling Off Rule

A common policy throughout regular season hockey and many minor hockey associations is the use of a 24-hour cooling off period surrounding concerns, frustrations, or emotionally charged situations. Moving forward, this approach will formally extend into our Cardinals spring season as well.

​

We believe thoughtful, respectful communication leads to better outcomes for everyone involved and helps maintain a positive environment for athletes, families, coaches, and staff alike.

Clearer Expectations Across the Program

As our program continued to grow, it became increasingly important to establish clearer expectations for everyone involved. For 2027, we will be implementing more defined guidelines and standards for players, families, coaches, and team staff to help ensure consistency across all Cardinals teams.

Our goal is not to create rigidity, but rather to build a shared understanding of the culture, accountability, and environment we want associated with Wheatland Hockey.

​

Continuing Strong Communication

One thing we were proud of throughout 2026 was the level of communication within our program, and we know how important that is for families. Moving forward, we remain committed to continuing strong, transparent, and proactive communication throughout the season.

​

More Development Prior to Tournament Play

Another major takeaway from 2026 was the importance of having more structured development time before tournament competition begins.

​

While tournaments are exciting and create valuable experiences for athletes, we believe players benefit most when there is additional time to build systems, habits, confidence, and team chemistry beforehand. This will be a significant area of emphasis moving into 2027.

​

Continuing to Elevate the Wheatland Brand Experience

One area we were especially proud of throughout 2026 was the excitement surrounding our merchandise, jerseys, and overall team identity. From tournament apparel to team gear, it was important to us that families felt proud representing Wheatland both at the rink and in the community.

​

Moving into 2027, we will continue placing a strong emphasis on high-quality merchandise and thoughtfully designed apparel that athletes and families are genuinely excited to wear. We believe these details help build pride, identity, and a stronger sense of belonging within our program.

Looking Ahead to 2027

We are excited to officially introduce several major changes and improvements for the upcoming Cardinals season.

​

Beginning in 2027, the Wheatland Cardinals program will be structured into two separate pathways:

​

• Competitive Spring Teams — travel tournament teams

• In-House Spring Development League — development-focused local programming

​

Both pathways will maintain a strong emphasis on player development while offering unique structures and experiences tailored to different athlete needs and goals.

​

Registration & Team Formation

For the 2027 season, priority registration will first be offered to returning Wheatland families before registration opens to the general public.

​

An in-house ID skate process will take place in early fall to help determine the most appropriate placement and combination of returning players within the program. Any roster spots that remain unfilled following this process will then be opened to new, non-returning athletes.

​

Our ID skates are not intended to simply identify “the best players.” Instead, they are designed to give our development and coaching staff the opportunity to evaluate athletes within a team environment and better understand how players complement one another on and off the ice.

​

While skill remains important, we also place significant value on attributes such as character, work ethic, leadership, coachability, attitude, and chemistry. We believe building successful teams requires much more than simply assembling the highest-skilled roster.

All ID skates will be offered free of charge.

​

Competitive Spring Teams

Our Competitive Spring Teams will now begin their development process well before tournament season begins through participation in our Wheatland Winter Development Program running January through the end of March.

​

This program will include:

• 10 on-ice development clinics designed and led by Coach Rich and Coach Ryan, Wheatland’s Heads of Development

• 4 dryland and cross-training sessions in partnership with Coach Avi at Victory Therapy in their Roblin Boulevard facility

• All winter development sessions will be attended alongside your spring team to help build chemistry, habits, and team identity prior to competition

​

Additional Competitive Team inclusions:

• Minimum of 33 total ice times throughout the program

• Full Coach the Coach clinic for all volunteer Wheatland coaches prior to the season

• 8 spring team practices

• 3 tournaments (including 1 travel tournament)

• 3 exhibition game ice times

• Full merchandise package

• Jerseys and socks included

​

Competitive teams will be offered for birth years 2013–2020.

​

To help maintain competitive balance and roster quality, teams will be limited to:

• One Gold/Silver+ level team per birth year

• One Silver level team per birth year

​

In-House Spring Development League

Our new In-House Spring Development League will provide athletes with a lower-travel, development-focused spring hockey experience centered around skill growth, game play, and fun competition.

​

The program will include:

• Minimum of 22 total ice times throughout the program

• 12 development-focused practices

• 6 inter-program scrimmages

• A program-wide championship tournament

• A championship trophy for the winning team to hoist

• Full merchandise package

• Jersey and socks included

This pathway is designed to provide athletes with meaningful spring development in a positive, team-oriented environment while maintaining flexibility for families during the busy spring season.

We are incredibly excited about the direction of the Cardinals program and grateful to the families who trusted us throughout our first full season. The lessons learned in 2026 are helping shape a stronger, more intentional experience for 2027 and beyond.
